Day 13 Advent Devotional – Rejoice! Rejoice!

Day 13 – Rejoice! Rejoice!

READ Philippians 4.4-9

Difficult times leading to joy is a common theme in the Bible. If you read through Philippians you might be surprised that Paul was in jail while writing the letter as joy is a driving force throughout. James tells us that we should consider it pure joy when we face trials. There have been plenty of people that have had their reality smashed to smithereens these past few months. Maybe you have been one of them. No one would say that it has been fun (nor do I think it is expected), but it has certainly forced us reevaluate our priorities and see what we have placed our hope in, where we find peace, and what brings us joy. As you pray today I want you to consider the song “O Come O Come, Emmanuel”. There are countless renditions of this song, but I recommend Peter Hollens’ version:

(though I suggest look up Pentatonix and for King and Country’s version as well). The song puts us in the place of Israel waiting for a Messiah to be sent into the world. And we sit now waiting for our Messiah to return.

“O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel”
